Tension After 2 Uinversity of Education Township Lahore Teachers Sacked

A TENSE situation surfaced at the University of Education, Township campus, on Monday when two faculty members of the university were sacked abruptly.

The removal of the faculty members caused a serious concern among the varsity’s teaching fraternity and the students while the latter also held a strong protest demonstration in the evening over the decision.

The services of Dr Muhammad Anwar-ur-Rehman Pasha, professor of Computer Sciences, Division of Science and Technology and Dr Shaheen Pasha, assistant professor of Special Education, were terminated by Prof Farhat Saleem who is looking after office of the varsity’s vice chancellor in addition to her own duties as principal of the University of Education’s Bank Road Campus.A faculty member, seeking anonymity, said there were rumours within the varsity that both the faculty members were allegedly victimised as Dr MA Pasha, husband of Dr Shaheen Pasha, was a potential candidate for the post of the varsity’s regular vice-chancellor, the post likely to be advertised soon.

He further said there were also concerns that the action of Prof Farhat Saleem might invite strong reaction from the government as she was not authorised to take such decisions.

Meanwhile, the protesting students chanted slogans in favour of their sacked teachers and demanded the acting VC withdraw the decision. According the notification issued by the University of Education’s Acting Registrar Bashir Ahmad Ch, the services of Dr Shaheen Pasha were terminated on her unsatisfactory work and conduct during probationary period.

When contacted, Prof Farhat Saleem said Dr MA Pasha was allegedly creating rift among the faculty members as well as students ever since she was assigned duties of the acting vice-chancellor.

She said Dr Pasha had been serving the varsity on six-month contract, renewed every time, for the last over one and half years, adding that however his performance was also not satisfactory. “I know it was a difficult decision”, she said, adding, “However I did so in better interest of the varsity as nothing is more important for me than sanctity of the varsity.” To a question, Prof Farhat said she was assigned duties of full-fledged vice-chancellor in addition to her own duties. Dr MA Pasha and Dr Shaheen Pasha were not available for comments.
